Origin 1 Preview

Phil Gould once said that "Origin is a scary place."

He's right. Only the tough survive so unless you can make your mark on the contest and take the game by the scruff of the neck you will be on the wrong side of the scoreboard.

Origin has something special about it, an intangible you can't put your finger on. For whatever reason it just works.

The speed of the game alone is enough to spin you into a frenzy and then you start to see some of the super human efforts the players produce.

Robbie Farah producing 63 tackles last year was an enormous effort, Paul Gallen playing 80 minutes in game 2 2011 and producing 200+ metres and more than 30 tackles.

Origin is famous for men coming up with efforts not normally seen and the same will happen this year.

An image of Greg Bird being picked up by the Blues trainer with a minute to go because he was so physically exhausted summed up the 2012 series for me.

While these massive efforts are something of legend, the 1% plays will have a huge say in the result.

I am as passionate Blues supporter at this time of year but without any hesitation I say the Blues will win the series.

I do realise Queensland is arguably the greatest team ever assembled but the quality of the Blues team can match them across the park.

The NSW forward pack is in my view a cut above the Queensland pack and I think they have gone in a big man too short when in the past they have relied on the likes of Civoniceva and Price to cart the ball forward.

Here are some of my game breakers.

The Forwards
Paul Gallen in the front row for the Blues is the right call for the side and I think it is his best position.

Greg Bird will play tighter to the ruck and might cause some headaches for the likes of Shillington and Scott in the early exchanges with his fast feet and aggression.

Luke Lewis and Anthony Watmough will cause similar headaches when they get their chance.

The big factors for the Blues pack will be Robbie Farah and Andrew Fifita when he gets on the field.

Farah single-handedly got the Tigers over the Cowboys in horrific conditions a few weeks back at Leichhardt.

He provided great composure and leadership to guide the young Tigers to victory.

His performance with the left boot and defensively suggest his game has gone to another level since he got back in the Origin fold last season. If NSW win you can almost expect Farah to be man of the match or damn near close to it.

Fifita is the one of the most damaging ball runners I have seen in a long time. For a man his size he defies logic in terms of what he can do on the field for a big man.

He consistently runs for 200m and makes 25 plus tackles. During a pre-season time trial run over 1.6km at the Sharks only Beau Ryan beat him which gives you an indication of how fit he is.

The Backs
The outside backs are all in form and have pace to burn. If they get their defensive structures right then the attacking aspect of their game will be taken care of.

Jennings has been outstanding since changing clubs and getting himself in the right frame of mind. Expect him to play well on Wednesday night.

Blake Ferguson is an enigma and does some unbelievably freakish things on a football field. Big, strong, fast and confidence to burn makes him a difficult prospect for the opposition. He will step up to the occasion.

Josh Morris has the job of containing Greg Inglis and will do his state proud. He did a terrific job last year and will do the same again. Queensland will not want to give him much space because he will make the most of it.

The Halves
Its simple for them. The foundation laid by the forwards needs to be capitalised on by Pearce and Maloney. This means repeat sets and providing quality ball for their outside men. They will determine how many points the Blues win by.

Origin Side

As you are all aware the NSW team has been 'leaked' 48 hours before the official announcement.

This is not the first time it has occurred, e.g. 2010 when Jamal Idris was confirmed as a debutant hours before the official announcement.

Lets run through the team and rate the team.

1. Jarryd Hayne - Proven Origin peformer who has played 16 games for the Blues without actually winning a series. He has been a man of the match winner in two games he has played on the wing, virtually impossible to do in any game let alone Origin.

His off-the-ball play has improved, especially defence. Had to be chosen in his preferred position.

2. Blake Ferguson - Let is be known that I am a huge fan of 'Chicka' Ferguson. Nathan Merritt has been NSW's best winger over the last 6 years but is still left out of the side. What more does he have to do?

'Chicka' in recent weeks has been making some very good players look like chopped liver. It was a one man show against the Storm and he is the reason Timana Tahu is now in reserve grade. He can make anyone look silly. A man who can do freakish things and will thrive on the Origin stage due to his infectious confidence.

3. Michael Jennings - Best centre in the competition on form currently. Blistering pace and outstanding support play, mixed with some improved defence has 'Jenko' in career best form. Queensland will be on high alert whenever he is near the ball.

He also fancies himself whenever he comes up against Justin Hodges. Confidence is the key.

4. Josh Morris - Not lighting up club football currently but had a huge series last year marking the incomparable Greg Inglis.

Picked on the basis that he has done the job before and no doubt he will do it again. Look out if he finds some space too.

5. Brett Morris - A controversial selection on the basis that he hasn't played consistent footy over the last month due to injury. He is an outstanding player who is the only Blue in the QLD dominated Australian back line. If fit and at his best he is a valuable asset to the side.

6. James Maloney - He strikes me as the type of guy you would love to play against. He is tough and has a really good short passing game. The Blues forwards love to offload and he is a great support player in the mould of a Terry Lamb. His excellent goal kicking is another major reason he got the nod over Carney and Sutton.

7. Mitchell Pearce - Adam Reynolds is still probably another year off stamping himself as an Origin player. Pearce has been in hot form along with Maloney for the Roosters. They combine well and expect them to do the same for the Blues.

8. James Tamou - Massive cog in the Blues Machine. He carts the ball up tirelessly and is an intimidating force in any pack. You feel safer for having him in your side.

9. Robbie Farah - The outstanding dummy-half candidate and you only need to watch the Tigers game against the Cowboys last night. Masterful kicking game and led his young and struggling side to a massive upset.

The best player in the 2012 series for both teams in my opinion last year. Expect more of the same.

10. Paul Gallen (C) - The modern day 'Mr Perpetual Motion'. The best forward in the world playing in what I believe is his best position. His performances at Prop in rep sides are something to behold and he will lead the side with reckless abandon as he normally does.

11. Luke Lewis - Experienced campaigner and always saves his best for Origin. You only need to ask the Queenslander's about how good this guy is. Has a massive reputation, similar to the way Brett Kenny had from QLD in the 80's.

12. Ryan Hoffman - His big match experience is undeniable and adds real punch to the side. Has a great ability to pick out spot players in defence and will terrorise his opposing half in defence.

13. Greg Bird - Absolute machine in a Blue jersey. The fire inside of him and his attitude of pushing the envelope at all costs gets under the skin of the Maroons. One of the first picked every time.

14. Kurt Gidley - A controversial selection but if you have a guy who can cover every position on the field except front row comfortably then he is a valuable asset.

Laurie Daley must have a plan to use him in a particular way so we will have to see what happens there.

15. Anthony Watmough - The kind of bloke I would walk over broken glass to play with. His leg drive in offence and aggression in defence makes him the quintessential interchange player.

They don't call him the 'DNA Freak' for nothing and has been one bloke who has single handedly dominated Origin games in the past.

16. Trent Merrin - Has been one of the form forwards of the competition. He is playing his 5th Origin game and will need to do more than come on and just fill a spot on the field. He needs to come on with a tonne of energy and look to offload the ball at every chance. He should watch how Maroon Corey Parker played in Game three from the bench last year and play in that manner.

17. Andrew Fifita - A potentially devastating entity from a QLD point of view. He is one of the strongest ball runners I have seen in a long time and is not afraid to get gritty in defence.

A huge plus for the team and needs to continue his white hot form for the Blues.

This team can get the job done, that I am sure.

Instead of debating who should be there I think we should get behind the team because there is nothing between the teams anymore.

The Blues are on the verge of a series victory and knowing they have the whole state behind them makes a massive difference come game time.

Queensland look a bit long in the tooth and were lucky to get home in 2012.

This is the year it turns around.

Origin hopefuls

30 days from State Of Origin and the annual debate of who will lead the Blues to an elusive victory seems to have been dragging on for months.

With two games in Sydney and players who can match Queensland across the park there is a great sense of timing and optimism for NSW fans.

I have been racking my own brain trying to figure out what line-up Laurie Daley will take to ANZ stadium in four weeks time.

Lets run through the candidates.

Fullback - If Brett Stewart is fit I believe he will get the nod. He scored three tries in the 2012 series and is a great asset to any team he plays in. Great speed and the ability to snuff out a try when his team mates need one are just some of his good qualities.

I wouldn't rule out Jarryd Hayne pushing to fullback if Stewart is unfit. His defence against the Cowboys showed a big improvement. He plays in a team of reserve graders every week which makes his job difficult. A veteran of 15 Origin games he will be in the side as a winger at the very least.

Wingers - The Blues have a few good options they can use here. Jarryd Hayne will take one of the wing spots so it comes down to Brett Morris, Nathan Merritt, Akuila Uate and Blake Ferguson.

If Brett Morris is fit, following last nights game vs Manly, he will be on the wing.

If he isn't there I think Nathan Merritt will make his long overdue debut. The best try scorer of his generation surely has to get a start if Morris can't take his place. Consistent performer who will not let the team down.

Uate and Ferguson are both enigmatic and can win you a game on pure ability. Uate is still suspect in defence and under the high ball so I dont think he will see any action this series.

Ferguson has stormed into calculation after an outstanding game against the Storm. He will play Origin in the future and it could possibly be on the wing this year. Speed, strength and a hell of a lot of confidence makes him hard to ignore.

Centres -  Michael Jennings and Josh Morris will fill the three quarter line. Jennings has been irresistible since moving to Bondi and Morris is a vital cog in defence lining up against Greg Inglis. Both have done the job before and I will be shocked if they both aren't there.

Halves -  James Maloney is said to be the front runner for the five-eighth position but Todd Carney's form since returning for the Sharks has been great. John Sutton has been in excellent form but I can't see him getting picked ahead of Maloney or Carney. Same can be said for Josh Reynolds.

Mitchell Pearce is a certainty to be playing halfback but Adam Reynolds is breathing right down his neck. Only an injury to Pearce would see Reynolds make his debut this year but he will feature in future series.

Props - James Tamou is also another certain starter for the team with his outstanding form continuing on from last year. Aaron Woods, Tim Grant, Trent Merrin, Willie Mason and even Paul Gallen are contending for spots in the engine room.

You may raise your eyebrows when I mention Mason but watching him closely over the last year it's hard not to be impressed. He still punches out numbers that rival any front rower he comes up against but most of all he brings confidence to those around him. Laurie Daley is a Mason fan and I can see him playing off the bench.

Tim Grant is the incumbent starter from last year and did very well. His form in a struggling side has also been good and his aggression is something needed in Origin. Look at his first run on Origin debut and you see what he is capable of.

Aaron Woods, along with Robbie Farah, has been the only constant in a depleted Tigers side. He aims up every week and is the front rower every coach would love to have in their team. Capable of playing big minutes as well.

Merrin has to be picked somewhere in the team. He has been the best forward for the Dragons and his switch to lock has made him more versatile. I believe he will play from the bench due to his new found versatility.

Daley is thinking of playing Gallen up front so he can have all his star backrowers in the team. It has worked before.

This is where the game can be won or lost. Its crucial Daley gets the right mix.

Back Row - This is where an advantage lies for the Blues. Luke Lewis, Greg Bird, Paul Gallen, Anthony Watmough and Glenn Stewart have all performed well in the past and will do so again.

The first four are certainties to make the team because Stewart has only just come back for the Sea Eagles and has said himself he lacks match fitness. I think Gallen will play at lock with Watmough and Bird to fill the other starting positions.

Lewis adds great impact from the bench with his best performances usually happening from this position.

They all offload the football well and create chances. If the Blues win the series it's likely one of these men will be player of the series.

Hooker - Robbie Farah is the only dummy half to be considered. Was the best player last year and will be a major player in 2013.

Kurt Gidley will come into consideration as a utility player/dummy half replacement.

So now lets see who I would go with come game one.

1. B. Stewart
2. B. Morris
3. M. Jennings
4. J. Morris
5. J. Hayne
6. T. Carney
7. M. Pearce
8. J. Tamou
9. R. Farah
10. T. Grant
11. A. Watmough
12. G. Bird
13. P. Gallen (C)
14. K. Gidley (need a player who can fill a number of spots)
15. T. Merrin
16. L. Lewis
17. A. Woods

This is my side who I think can get the job done.

Discuss.

NRL Finals Week One

Its finally here and I cant contain my excitement. September and NRL can only mean one thing... Semi Final football.

There isnt too much between the top four teams. Personally I think any of those sides can win it if they produce their best football. I like the new system that the NRL has adopted for this finals series and its impact can be seen by the week one match ups.

Bulldogs V Manly is going to be a sensational game. Manly will start favourites, just the way Des Hasler would like it. We all know the back story to this game with Des and Manly and all that rig morale. I think all of that has been flogged to death and a bit more focus will be on some of the individual match ups.

Imagine being young Josh Jackson having to mark up against Tony Williams on your Finals debut. Ben Barba and Brett Stewart, Kieran Foran and Josh Reynolds the list goes on. I think Manly will win this game, they are peaking at the right time and have been in second gear during their last 4 victories. That being said I wont be surprised if the Bulldogs come out of the blocks quickly and blow the game away. It will be a hard hitting game and the loser will be vulnerable when they have to play next week against either Cronulla or Canberra.

Melbourne V South Sydney. Billy Slater said today that this Rabbitoh's side has a very 'Melboure' feel about them. Greg Inglis, Michael Crocker, Matt King, Coach Michael McGuire all spent significent time with the Storm and won Grand Finals. Michael Crocker only lost one game in his time with the club, an outstanding record.

Melbourne having a home game this weekend is a huge advantage. South Sydney have never won in Melbourne and they have struggled to defeat teams higher than them or around the same position on the ladder. With Greg Inglis in the kind of form he is in, the other guys will jump on board and I am sure they will play well. We will learn a lot about Souths this weekend.

North Queensland V Brisbane. A QLD derby is just what the doctor ordered for the first week of the Finals. They will bring out the best in each other. The Cowboys held Brisbane to 0 in Townsville earlier this year. 2004 saw the same match in the Cowboys maiden Finals series and it was a 10-0 upset to North Queensland. That match was won on defence and I think this one will be the same. We have all see how brilliant the Cowboys attack can be but defence wins championships. Brisbane have struggles severely after Origin and have looked tired. They will bust their guts and give it everything but I cant see them winning this one. Lacked potency in attack recently, they need to turn things around fast.

Canberra V Cronulla. If you had of told me 8 weeks ago this was going to be the 6v7 elimination game, I would have slapped you. The Raiders since round 14 have been pretty good. They have won 5 in a row and have been playing with the semi final mindset since about June. Cronulla's bubble has burst and have won just 2 of their last nine games but they will be markedly better come Sunday. Todd Carney returns to Canberra for a semi final for the first time since he was sacked by the club. This could be a classic finals game and I think Canberra will win. Since they have treated their home games like away games they have been outstanding. Josh McCrone has been wonderful and Shaun Fensom is a workaholic in the mould of a Dallas Johnson. His running game is much underrated. Shillington will lead the forwards and Josh Dugan returning is a constant threat.

There is my look at the first week of Finals.

This is going to be a great series. I honestly couldnt give you an answer on who will win the comp. My answer will change several times over the next month.

Massive NRL News Day

Has there ever been a day where a Coach getting sacked is hardly talked about? I didnt think I would see it but here we are.

The new NRL Television deal was announced today and from a fans point of view I think they have come up a bit short. They have paid a billion dollars for virtually the same deal they used to pay half for. The Fox Sports coverage will be improved so some of the money spent is justified in that respect.

Delayed matches was the biggest issue from the punters point of view. In a day where Social Media (Twitter, Facebook) will tell you the result rather than sit through all the commercials, surely this would effect Channel Nine's ratings. There are those idiots who still tweet NRL clubs saying 'dont give away the results, we want to watch the game on replay'. My answer to those clowns is to get off social media sites, clubs have a duty to keep their fans informed and give them updates as they come to hand.

David Gyngell argued at the announcement that they lose money with live games so they need advertising hence they delayed telecast of friday night and sunday arvo games. I understand where he is coming from, afterall he is paying to have the games aired on his network. But this is 2012 and I would have thought there would be a way to have all games live. In the future we could possibly look at how the AFL run their coverage and even sports from the United States.

It really seems appropriate that Ben Hornby announced his retirement 2 weeks before he will play his last game. For the past 12 years he has been the games quiet achiever and when you mention St George-Illawarra, Ben Horby's name is associated with the red V instantly. He has played every season there except their inaugral campaign in 1999. Represented NSW and Australia, captained the Dragons to their first Premiership as a joint venture and is now the most capped St George player of all time. Its an outstanding resume.

Laurie Daley was also appointed coach of NSW for the next two years. For me this is a bit of a gamble. Daley has had success coaching Country Origin and the Indigenous All Stars. Daley also captained NSW and thrived on the big stage of State of Origin. He has huge boots to fill after Ricky Stuart has turned NSW into a team capable of winning a series.

We must also remember Daley was a selector from 2002-2010 where he and Bob McCarthy were heavily criticised after losing five straight series for not 'picking and sticking'. You can also argue that NSW didnt have the cattle available during that time to defeat QLD but I think this is irrelevent. Players are held responsible for their performances, they are given a chance to perform and show what they can do. These guys are professionals, they should be able to perform night in, night out. If the Mail man missed half of his mail run he would get the sack. You get where I am going with this. Selectors shouldn't be held accountable for players performances.

If surrounded by the right team of Coaches and staff, I think Daley can succeed in his new job.

And Brian McLennan was sacked this morning from the Warriors Head Coaching role. Fair enough too, how can a team go from Grand Finallists and future 'powerhouse' of the game to a side that gives up leads and gets flogged most weeks. Its not all his fault but the buck does stop with him.

Will hiring Steven Kearney get the Warriors going again? You would have to say no, he won nine games with Parramatta over 2 seasons and got the sack. Im worried they are going backwards.

Finals Race

The top 8 is done and dusted. Where they will all finish is all that needs to be decided. Yes I do realise that Canberra and Newcastle both have a chance to stay in the hunt within striking distance but I cant see them sneaking into 8th position.

Canberra should win today against Penrith but stranger things have happened, especially with the Green Machine. Supporting this mob is great fodder for a heart attack and their form line represents the Manhattan skyline, up and down. That being said I still make sure I watch the Raiders play every week because when it sticks there isn't many sides better to watch. If they had Terry Campese for a full season this year I think they would be a top 8 side. A big concern for them in the future is that Coach David Furner had to take his team out of the ACT the night before their victory against Brisbane and treat it like an away game. Canberra Stadium used to be the most feared road trip in the NRL. I have seen many good sides travel to the nations capital and lose by a big margin. I have also seen the Raiders side that couldn't win away from Canberra if you put it on a silver platter for them.

Its been the problem for the past couple of season and we keep hearing the excuse "we are a young side". That has to stop in the next few weeks for them to have any hope for making the 8 and if they want to play regular September football in years to come.

My boys, the mighty Newcastle Knights have been very hard to follow at times this season. It took 19 weeks for them to get used to Wayne Bennett and what he expects from his team. The win against Manly showed what they are capable of when they play the top sides. Its easy to say with the benefit of hindsight but I actually left the Knights out of my top 8 at the start of this season. Their club culture is built on being the underdog and the transition to being the 'biggest dog in the yard' was always going to take longer than one pre-season. They will miss the eight this year but their should be some good times to come. Tyrone Roberts has emerged as a player of great promise and taken a lot of pressure off Jarrod Mullen, who has also been really good in the back half of the year especially with his kicking game. Akuila Uate being dropped from Origin has been the best thing to happen to him in his short career and he looks hungry. The big key going forward is Darius Boyd beginning to look comfortable with his new team. Boyd and Mullen played as the five-eighth and fullback in the 2005 Australian schoolboys team 7 years ago and that old combination is really starting to click.

The Dragons this season, to put it simply, have been poor. 2012 was gone for them quite some time ago even though they were only put to bed last night by the Tigers. The pre-season for 2013 will be a massive test for Steve Price and his coaching staff. Defensively there isn't too much to worry about but their attack is weak. The experts will tell you defence wins you games but scoring a few try's won't harm your chances either. It could well be a case for re-inventing the wheel for St George as they have looked stale and flat for a major chunk of the season. Apart from Brett Morris out wide they don't have much strike power and with some spare money under the cap they could really use a quality centre with Matt Cooper certain to move on after 2013. Some tough times ahead for the 2010 premiers.

I am starting to get that feel for the Tigers and I hope I'm not let down. Last's night performance was just what the doctor ordered. Forcing 5 line drop outs and completing 34/40 sets in cyclonic conditions is 'winning' football. They were forced into playing that style but they will hopefully see the benefits in the coming weeks. Friday night against the Bulldogs shapes as a game of the year contender. Benji Marshall and Robbie Farah have been at their best in their last 2 games. The signs are there for one of those late season runs from the Wests Tigers. Their biggest obstacle is the Wests Tigers.

The Finals series gets better every year and this season will be no different.

After watching Friday nights game, Manly have convinced me they are capable of going back to back. It could well be the Sea Eagles and the Bulldogs playing off on the first weekend in October. It would be the most heavily saturated all Sydney Grand final in terms of media coverage for years, possibly ever.

Origin 3!

Here we are. Just hours away until the big one. My thinking hasn't changed, I still think the Blues will win tonight. Its going to be a classic!

Which team is willing to endure more to win the game?

Who is willing to risk long term injury to win?

Who is willing to bleed for their state? Who is prepared to go to places inside themselves they didn't know existed?

Whoever can answer all of these questions will most likely come out on top. Origin is won on guts, heart and determination. You hesitate, you lose. If you don't back yourself, you lose. Thats how close it is, both teams are that good one error can decide the match.

I remember Michael De Vere splitting his head open and getting stapled on the sideline to try and get himself back into the action and help his team mates.

There is footage of 'Mr Perpetual Motion' Ray Price after a game in 1984 collapsed on the dressing room floor covered in mud not being able to get to his feet to change out of his playing gear.

Shaun Timmins in 2004 playing out of position at five eighth. Its extra time, he gets the ball 40m out and slots a field goal kicking with his wrong foot. His knees were so bad he knew going into the match it would be his last game. He couldn't even run some days but he always got up to play Origin. A childhood hero of mine.

Bob Linder played a game for Queensland with a fracture in his ankle. Meninga broke his arm, Alfie broke his leg and Fatty Vautin had a heavy concussion, all in the same game. It was game 2 in 1989 and QLD finished the game with 11 players on the field, still able to win the game on the back of Wally Lewis magic. Heart and determination got them over the line that night.

I remember Paul Bowman tearing his ACL and somehow getting to his feet to make 2 more tackles before he was taken from the field. He was willing to risk long term injury and possibly his career to help his mates. It was something I won't ever forget. Bowman was one of those guys who wasn't gifted with speed, strength or natural ability but he gave you everything you had. A true Origin player.

There will be casualties in this game make no bones about that. Whoever keeps grinding away and takes their opportunities will get the job done.

Its mono e mono, who's the toughest? Who's the baddest?. Its a promotors dream! This game will break television records. 52 and a half thousand people will be there on the night and say in years to come, "I was there when we won 7 in a row" or "I was there when NSW won and bought the shield back south of the Tweed"

Which one will it be? Tune in tonight, you are sure to watch history.
